Shipping building materials and furniture from China: what deserves extra attention?
Tiles, furniture, beds, fixtures, and machinery can create very different loading, documentation, product, and delivery risks even when they serve the same construction project.
Decision first
How should importers prepare mixed, heavy, fragile, bulky, or project-specific cargo for a U.S. shipment?
Describe each product precisely
List material, construction, intended use, dimensions, quantity, value, and country of origin by product. Broad descriptions make classification and product-control review harder.
- Separate stone, ceramic, wood, metal, textile, electrical, and upholstered items
- Identify wood packaging and treatment records where applicable
- Flag used machinery, motors, batteries, chemicals, or regulated components early
Engineer the loading sequence
Dense tile, delicate finishes, long furniture pieces, mattresses, and machinery need a plan for weight distribution, protection, bracing, moisture, access, and unloading order.
- Collect accurate package dimensions and gross weights from every factory
- Decide which cargo can stack and which surfaces require separation
- Photograph the agreed loading condition without exposing customer documents
Match delivery to the project site
Construction and receiving sites may have limited hours, restricted truck access, no dock, or special unloading equipment. Confirm whether delivery ends at port, warehouse, commercial site, or another agreed point.
- Check forklift, crane, dock, labor, and appointment availability
- Confirm whether long, heavy, or crated pieces need special equipment
- Keep a contingency for inspection, damage review, storage, or route changes
Questions importers ask
Can tiles and furniture load in the same container?
Sometimes, but only after reviewing weight distribution, protection, stackability, loading order, and unloading. A consolidation plan should reflect the actual packages and factory sequence.
What changes when machinery is used?
Used equipment can raise questions about condition, cleaning, valuation, product details, engine or battery status, and admissibility. Confirm requirements with the importer, broker, and qualified advisers before shipping.
