DDP Decision Guide

DDP shipping from China to the USA: what must the quote actually define?

A DDP label is not enough. A usable proposal names the importer structure, route, delivery point, included charges, assumptions, documents, product risks, and treatment of exceptions.

Decision first

Which parties, charges, customs responsibilities, and exceptions are included in the proposed door-to-door plan?

Confirm the parties before the price

Identify the buyer, seller, Importer of Record, customs broker, consignee, and final receiver. Confirm that the proposed structure is acceptable to the importer and the professionals responsible for entry.

  • Who supplies classification, valuation, origin, and product information?
  • Who maintains the required Customs Bond and importer records?
  • Who responds if an authority requests documents or samples?

Read inclusions line by line

The confirmed quotation and agreed service terms should state whether duties, additional taxes, destination charges, final delivery, exams, opening, storage, demurrage, detention, returns, or regulatory actions are included, excluded, or billed when incurred.

  • Ask what cargo, value, HTS assumption, weight, volume, and route the price uses
  • Check free time, delivery waiting time, accessorials, and change procedures
  • Do not assume an unlisted authority or carrier charge is absorbed

Screen product risk before departure

Classification, AD/CVD exposure, UFLPA, FDA, CPSC, intellectual-property, valuation, and origin questions can change admissibility or cost. Operational coordination is not legal advice.

  • Use a specific commercial description rather than a broad product label
  • Keep supplier and material facts available for the importer and broker
  • Escalate uncertain compliance questions to qualified counsel or the relevant authority

Questions importers ask

Does DDP mean every possible charge is included?

Only charges expressly listed in the accepted quotation and terms are included. Cargo changes, inaccurate information, exams, storage, penalties, or regulatory action may fall outside the agreed scope.

Can DDP remove the importer’s compliance responsibility?

No commercial label replaces obligations imposed by U.S. law or an authority. The parties should confirm the structure with their broker, counsel, and other qualified advisers.
